Kids are funny. I like them.
Erin and I were both Girl Guides when we were little girls and now as an adult, I have the pleasure of being a leader. I have about sixteen seven- and eight-year-old girls in my group this year and they are a laugh riot. Tonight, one little girl was explaining sperm to me and I had to listen attentively with a straight face. She was really a fountain of knowledge! (Pardon the visual.)
But tonight’s best moment comes from Julia, a freckled, blonde second-year girl who is super bright and chatty. We were going around the circle saying things that each of us were good at and I think her answer might have been “I am good at singing” or something. Then we went around the circle telling what thing we’d like to try or improve upon and the girls all had answers at the ready (mostly “horseback riding” and “living on a farm” for some reason), and I was surprised when we got to Julia and she was stumped.
“Hm,” she says, biting her lip, “I had it. Um…” We’re all looking at her expectantly, and she’s just repeating, “Um… er…” so I say, “do you want us to come back to you?” And she takes another moment to try her memory again and then turns to her neighbor and tells that little girl to go ahead. But the moment that next girl opens her mouth, Julia raises her hand and blurts, “Oh yeah! I’ve have it again! I want to improve my memory!” What a brat ;)
